Independent mobile games developer, Lockwood Publishing, has announced plans to open a new development office in Lisbon in March. It will be led by newly appointed Lisbon Studio Head, Ricardo Flores, and create 30 news jobs spanning games design, animation, software and coding.
The news comes at an exciting time for Lockwood Publishing, with the investment in Lisbon part of the company’s broader expansion strategy for 2020.
The office will officially open in March and the team is already inviting applications from talent across multiple disciplines. With 2019 being another record year for tech investment in Portugal’s capital, alongside an increasingly vibrant and enviable quality of life attracting a wealth of talented people, Lisbon was the perfect place for Lockwood Publishing to establish a studio.
The team will work hand-in-hand with Lockwood’s award-winning creators in its Nottingham HQ, collaborating with the team behind the award-winning Avakin Life, that allows players to create avatars and experience a rich, 3D virtual world.
Flores is a seasoned games developer, marketer and producer with industry experience at Biodroid and more recently award winning indie studio Fun Punch. He has been in the industry since mobile java days, taught videogames production at the Polytechnics Institutes of Lisbon and Leiria and is an active member of the Portuguese game dev scene.
Commenting on the Lisbon expansion, Karl Hilton, Studios Director said:
“We’re obsessed with finding the perfect balance between incredible work and outstanding quality of life. Lisbon ticked both these boxes. It’s a hugely vibrant tech, startup and creative hub, and we can’t wait to be an active part of that community. This expansion is our first major investment in 2020 and there’s more to come across our existing studios and in other locations.
“I’m personally very excited to be working with Ricardo who brings a huge amount of experience in games development making him the natural choice to lead as our Lisbon Studio Head.”
Ricardo Flores, Lisbon Studio Head, added:
“Lisbon’s tremendous growth and position on the global tech and creative stage makes this an incredibly exciting opportunity for us. The epic tech talent, enviable quality of life and broader political stability will also be key to attracting the right team and our next generation of creators. So if you’re a budding young developer, animator, software engineer or coder in the Lisbon area, or in the UK looking for an opportunity to relocate, we’d love to hear from you.”
Today’s news comes as Lockwood Publishing eyes further expansion at home and abroad, with plans for further investment in Newcastle and London in the next six months, as well as further growth across its existing portfolio in its Vilnius office.
