Instructure Canvas Integrates with Google Hangouts Meet

Instructure, the makers of the Canvas Learning Management System, has today announced a new LTI integration to connect with students and teachers using Google Hangouts Meet as their conferencing tool. They now have the ability to add a Hangouts Meet code to their Canvas Course, Course Announcement, Module or via Calendar.

Canvas customers with Google accounts will be able to create audio and video conference calls (Meets) using the Google Meet integration with Canvas. This integration provides a way to link to a Google Meet from within the Canvas LMS Rich Content Editor, meaning that teachers can link to a conference from calendar invites, discussions, pages, assignments, and anywhere else that the Rich Content Editor is available.

The Google Hangouts Meet LTI integration can be viewed in the new or classic Rich Content Editor.

In addition, Google is giving free access to its advanced Hangouts Meet video-conferencing capabilities to all G Suite and G Suite for Education customers globally through July 2020.

These advanced features include:

  • Larger meetings, for up to 250 participants per call
  • Live streaming for up to 100,000 viewers within a domain
  • The ability to record meetings and save them to Google Drive
