The first software in the history of computer science

Since the invention of computer software, it’s safe to say that there have been continuing developments ever since, and such developments are still coming forward including the ongoing new technology in today’s world. Modern technology has now become more ingrained in our daily lives and many of us would not be able to function without the devices we use today. We can say that the early days of development were between 1948 and 1979. Although different sources have varied information about where and when the very first piece of software was created. Records show that it was a computer scientist named Tom Kilburn who invented the earliest form of software back in 1948 at the University of Manchester, England.

However, there were also other figures involved in the early days of computer science, including Alan Turing, who is recognised as the first person to come up with the theory of it, in 1935. Theories were also explored by Ada Lovelace who created programs for Charles Babbages’ “Analytic Engine” but these discoveries remained only in a theoretical form.

In 1966, a digital program was created for the Apollo mission and was called the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC), however, this Avionics type of system which was built for a specific purpose was obviously quite different from mainstream software. Check out this link if you want to learn more about the AGC and the specific software technology that was used.

In the 1970s Apple created its first-ever personal computer, which was called the Apple-1. It was designed and created by Steve Wozniak in 1976 and along with his friend, Steve Jobs, the Apple Computer Company was formed. The following year, the next version (Apple-2) was released. It goes without saying that this company is among the top brands in terms of technological development as can be seen by its ongoing popularity and success.

The first IBM computer was introduced in 1981 and this operating system, developed by Bill Gates, was the first version of the Microsoft software which is still used today. Just two years later, when the Microsoft Corporation a Graphical User Interface, it was decided to change the name to Microsoft Windows, and the first version of this software was released in 1985.

The 1990s saw an increase in the use of mobile software, and this is when the first Blackberry devices were introduced. New operating systems were also created, including the Mac OSX from Apple (later replaced with Macintosh from 2002), and also the Windows XP software from Microsoft was in motion in the late 1990s but released in 2001.

From the 2000s, Apple then issued the first iPhones. iPads and tablets then followed in 2010. Although Microsoft designed their own tablet first, it wasn’t very popular and in the meantime, Apple was having more technological success.

From 2010 to the present day, the evolution of software and technology has no signs of stopping. We have seen incredible creations over these years, and amazing technology that has completely changed our lives. Just think about how much software is contained in your smartphone, tablet, laptop, notebook, or desktop and appreciate how far things have evolved. Such progress is remarkable and without knowing what to expect in the future, it’s pretty certain that we will witness further advances, including many new features and variations of devices and we can only marvel at the wonder of what awaits us in the world of technology.
