Across the globe people are binge-gaming longer than ever, increasing by seven per cent from 2019 to an average of four hours and 36 minutes. That’s according to the latest “State of Online Gaming” research report on worldwide consumers’ gaming behaviours and expectations from Limelight Networks (Nasdaq: LLNW), a leading provider of edge cloud services.
The rise of binge-gaming is an even bigger trend among young gamers. This report showed global respondents aged 18-25 binge-play for an average of six hours and 34 minutes a week, 11 per cent longer than one year ago. Japan and the UK had the most gamers who play more than 20 hours each week at 12 per cent and 10 per cent respectively.
These longer binge-gaming sessions can be attributed in part to the rise of anywhere, anytime gaming. Mobile phones are the primary gaming device for worldwide gamers, with the preference for smartphone gaming increasing by 13 per cent from 2019. Mobile phones are also preferred in the U.K. followed by Gaming consoles. This year’s report identified strong interest in console-less gaming services. Only a third of UK gamers say they would subscribe to a console-less gaming service like Google Stadia, whereas 44 per cent of global respondents say they’re interested in subscribing.
Additional insights from the report include:
- Price and performance could limit adoption of console-less gaming. Interest in new console-less gaming platforms is especially high (71 per cent), among those who define themselves as experts, and (77 per cent), among aspiring professional gamers. However, two in three (67 per cent) UK gamers would not be interested in console-less gaming, as concerns with high price points (66 per cent) and performance issues such as latency (16 per cent) are cited as the top reasons they wouldn’t subscribe.
- Watching others play video games increases in popularity for younger gamers, sparking the desire to go pro. Gamers aged 18 to 25 watch others play video games online (via platforms such as Twitch or YouTube Gaming) for more than four hours each week and are the most likely to want to turn this hobby into a profession (53 per cent). In the UK, over 46 per cent of gamers would quit their jobs and become professional gamers if they could support themselves.
- Gamers prioritise playing over many daily activities. More than half of UK gamers (59 per cent) have missed sleep to keep playing. Many UK consumers have also skipped work (7 per cent), meals (7 per cent) and showers (23 per cent). Globally, younger gamers are the most likely to miss a meal (39 per cent) or shower (35 per cent) to continue playing.
- Download speed is a top frustration especially for hardcore gamers. The vast majority of global gamers (87 per cent) find the process of downloading games frustrating. Over one-third of UK gamers (36 per cent) note slow download speed is their primary concern, 29 per cent are frustrated when downloads don’t work and 22 per cent when downloads are interrupted and have to start over again.
“Players are excited about the flexibility of console-less gaming,” said Michael Milligan, Senior Director at Limelight Networks. “As the world of gaming is being redefined, wide adoption depends on low latency solutions that eliminate frustrating performance disruptions and delays. Keeping gamers engaged requires innovative technology that powers real-time, interactive gaming at the edge.”
The State of Online Gaming report is based on responses from 4,500 consumers in France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States aged 18 and older who play video games at least once a week.
